We Are Switching To A Non-Toxic Lifestyle!

After our miscarriage/pregnancy loss, we have decided to change over to a non-toxic lifestyle. Infertility, miscarriage and toxins are heavily related

There have been numerous times that I’ve suggested to my husband that we cut toxins out of our lives but it’s honestly not the easiest thing to do. When I think too much about it, I get very overwhelmed because once I deep dive into the world wide web and read about all these horrible ingredients, I immediately want to crawl in a hole. The world is such a scary place.

The first thing I did was post on my Instagram and asked for recommendations and ya’ll delivered! I think I had about 25-40 brand recommendations for different products. Which was only a little bit more overwhelming but it was also so very helpful.

When I was pregnant, I started to switch over to non-toxic household cleaners because they were safer for our baby but when we found out that we were going to miscarry, I knew that this switch needed to be made as soon as possible. Hear me out, I don’t think that living the non-toxic lifestyle would have saved our baby. I understand that there is nothing I could have done but I have researched the topic of fertility and toxins, it’s scary ya’ll. I want my husband’s sperm and my eggs to be the best quality so I have to surround myself with high quality products.

HOW TO KNOW IF SOMETHING IS TOXIC OR NOT

I started by download Think Dirty app and it sent me into a frenzy. I used the scanner and scanned everything in my bathroom and was horrified. Ya’ll I had so many toxins in my bathroom. Just my bathroom, I hadn’t even gotten to scan things in my clean cabinet under the sink! I started to panic and I showed my husband how terrible our products were. Even the products that I thought were better for you, weren’t. It was really bad. I don’t want to put anyone on blast but trust me, you want to scan your makeup, deodorant, perfume, lotion, facial cleanser, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, DO YOU SEE WHERE I’M GOING WITH THIS? THEY ARE EVERYWHERE.

After using the Think Dirty app for a few weeks, I had a few people tell me to cross-reference with EWG. To be honest, I don’t know which is more reliable. I use both because and usually I get the same information, sometimes I do get different information and then I do some research on my own. Which isn’t necessarily fun but I want to be safe.

MAKING THE SWITCH

Remember earlier when I mentioned that this was an expensive change to make? Turns out it’s really not that much more that we are already buying. If you were look at my search history right now, it’s all “what are non toxic brands for toothpaste” and so on. I’m getting a little nutty but I know that it will be better for our health in the long run. I haven’t even wore nail polish in months because I am terrified of the toxins. My toes were not cute this summer!

Here’s what i’ve already switched:

  • Deodorant - I went from using Dove to Native. I was really, really nervous to try a natural deodorant because you hear a lot of horror stories about how it doesn’t help your sweating, the smell doesn’t stay all day, and some brands will give you a rash under you arm. I’m a huge baby and cannot deal with an underarm rash. It sounds miserable. I did some research Native has a Coconut & Vanilla (I almost typed flavor, haha) scent and I honestly really enjoy it. Nothing bad to say! It’s the only scent that is free of baking soda which is what irritates sensitive skin. So if you are pale, German decent girl like me, stick with this one.

  • Facial Cleanser - I switched from Clean & Clear to Pacifica. I use the Pacifica Sea Foam Complete Face Wash and I really enjoy it! So far, my skin has not complained. It’s no secret that Clean & Clear probably didn’t use. the best ingredients. The Pacifica brand is a little bit more expensive but I felt like it was worth the money. I use it wash off makeup at the end of the day and I wash my face with it before I put on makeup the next day, so at the end of the day I use it twice.

  • Face Lotion - I switched from anything I could get my hands on to Pacifica Coconut Probiotic Water Rehab Cream. So far, I really like this product. It smells like coconut which I resonate with smelling fresh and clean. I put it one once a day prior to putting on my makeup. Just like with the deodorant, lotions which a scent usually make my skin irritated and dry but so far, this product has been great!

  • Body Lotion - I switched from anything I could get my hands on to Coconut Oil. You read that correctly, I put coconut oil on my body and i’ve actually been doing that for awhile now. Sure it’s oily but it does wonders for my skin. It’s natural, it’s good to eat, drink, wear, why not? I’ve even used it as a makeup primer, but I was going to talk about that more in my toxic-free make up post. My favorite coconut oil is from Trader Joes. I know that really, it’s all the same but I like the way TJ’s Coconut Oil smells. Plus the jar says organic and to be honest I just trust the word. I’M NOT PERFECT.

  • Chapstick - I have three chapsticks that I swear by, 1) Coconut Oil again! It’s great, 2) Pacifica Lip Tint, 3) Heartspring.Co which is handmade chapstick that is totally natural and toxin free!

  • Household Cleaner - I switched from Lysol anything to Method brand. Lysol is so very bad for your body and I didn’t realize that until doing some research. I won’t spoil that for you, look it up yourself (it’s scary). I’ve searched my app for a good non-toxic cleaner and everything that I find is terribly expensive. While I was in Target, I scanned some of what they offer and I found that Method is not terrible. It’s not the best but not the worst so it was a good first step! If you have one that you trust and know it’s toxic free, let me know!

  • Laundry Detergent - I switched from Gain to All Free & Clear. How funny that All Free & Clear has been sitting next to Gain all this time. I think the worst part of Gain is the fragrance. That seems to be the worst part of most items because it’s artificially put in there. I’m totally find with unscented but that’s because I’m crazy. I don’t smell bad. Clean smells good ya know! I also looked into The Honest Company but according to my apps, All Free & Clear was better rated. So far, we like it and have no complaints!

We have a long way to go with switching products over but as we do it, I’ll be sure to let you know which ones I like best! I plan on doing a post all about toxic-free makeup because I’ve switched a few things but not a lot. It’s a work in progress (plus I need money).
